Porting Kaffe to a new platform

I had port JIT engine to Alpha Tru64 and GNU/Linux Alpha in the past and I know how it's difficult to understand correctly intrp and JIT engines with only sources as documentation. I had write this document latter while I was porting intrp engine to Darwin (Mac OS X) operating system. In the same time I was writing JIT back-end for PowerPC.

These are some Free Software projects I'm involved with or I've already contributed in the past:

Kaffe: a Free Java Virtual Machine, started by Tim Wilkinson, one of the founders of Transvirtual Technologies.
You can find some snapshot and KJC patches here.
KJC: a Free Java Compiler written in Java and avalaible under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
PocketLinux: Kaffe and GNU/Linux based PDA applications.
Debian GNU/Linux: the GNU/Linux distribution I use and recommend. Later, I will try Debian GNU/Hurd.
You can find some patched packages here and some binaries packages for slink here. Sorry, you can't use apt-get to fetch them :-(
MasqMail: A mailer for hosts without permanent internet connection.
Mutt: a small but very powerful text based program for reading electronic mail under unix operating systems, including support color terminals, MIME, and a threaded sorting mode.
GNU id-utils: a package of simple, fast, high-capacity, language-independent tools that index program identifiers, literal numbers, or words of human-readable text.
GNU Libtool: a GNU portable shared and static library generator, started by Gordon Metzigkeit.
JLint, AntiC and JavaGO: Java program checker, common syntax verifier for C-family languages, Java byte code global optimizer developed by Konstantin Knizhnik.
Kawa: a Scheme environment, written in Java, and that compiles Scheme code into Java byte-codes, developed by Per Bothner.
Vi IMproved: a VI clone for almost all operating systems (Amiga, BeOS, DOS, MacOS, RiscOS, Unix, WindowsCE/95/98/NT).
LessTif is the Hungry Programmers' version of OSF/Motif®. LessTif is source compatible with OSF/Motif® 1.2 and is licensed under the GNU Library General Public License (LGPL).
Bigloo: a Scheme implementation devoted to one goal: enabling Scheme based programming style where C(++) is usually required, developed by Manuel Serrano.

Local patches not yet include in official releases:

GNU Make: Patch from CVS Tree on 13 September 2001 (5Kb): gmake-atD-20010913.diff.gz.

    Implements System V make's automatic variables $$@, $$(@D) and $$(@F) in
    the dependencies of a rule.

GNU id-utils: Patch from official alpha id-utils-3.2d (5Kb): id-utils-3.2d-egp2.diff.gz.

    Handle long and unsigned modifiers in C numbers.
    Improve C ``keep contents of string''.
    Add Lisp-like scanner.
    Handle long lines in lid grep method.
    Protect dirname() arguments.
    Handle --default-lang argument in mkid.

AntiC (JLint): Patch from official jlint-1.11.1, private release 1.11.3 (2Kb): patches/jlint-1.11.1-1.11.3.diff.gz.

    Add support of \a and \v escape sequences in C and C++ mode.
    Reset magic comment parser on each line.

    Warns where == may be used in place of =.

GNU/Linux modutils: Guest prefix used by genksyms for current kernel.
Patch from official modutils-2.1.121, (2Kb): patches/modutils-2.1.121-egp2.diff.gz.
Patch from official modutils-2.3.9, (1Kb): patches/modutils-2.3.9-egp2.diff.gz.
Prebuild binaries for i386 libc5 and libc6 (31Kb): patches/modutils-2.1.121-egp2.tar.gz.

    Since kernel 2.2.13, version-info prefixes could be `smp_', `2gig_',
    `smp2gig_' or none.  Only `smp_' is handle by modutils-2.3.9 and
    modutils-2.1.121 don't handle prefix in version-info at all.
    For your pleasure RedHat changes this prefix in there 6.1 release :(

    This patch guest prefix used by genksyms for current kernel by looking for
    symbol `get_module_symbols'.

GNU Compiler Collection: Patch from official gcc-2.95.2 (1Kb): gcc-2.95.2-localincludedir.diff.gz.

    The definition of LOCAL_INCLUDE_DIR in gcc/Makefile.in came from
    $(includedir) which is setup to $(prefix)/include in upper Makefile.  This
    is not correct, it should be $(local_prefix)/include.  Change name of this
    variable to localincludedir.
